EAST MOUNTAIN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

MINUTES

NOVEMBER 20, 2019

 

Attendees:  27

Meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm which began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Dr. Charles McNair and followed by a Moment of Silence for our departed neighbors.

 

Community Relations Officer Charles Carangelo reported:

·         The PAL Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday November 23rd from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at PAL.

·         The Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery was broken into.

·         There was a robbery at One Stop on East Main St.

·         There have been approximately 10 O.D. cases per day of opioids.

·         Panhandling is a problem on Reidville Dr.

·         A pedestrian was struck on Reidville Dr.

·         The city is trying to clean up homeless sites.

·         Temporary speed bumps will be installed around parks in the spring.

 

Guest speaker Dr. Charles McNair spoke about his book “Soldiers of a Foreign War”

·         He served in Vietnam between 1969 and 1970 as a doctor in a small hospital in Vietnam.

·         He spoke about the field medics in the Vietnam War.  Many received medals of honor for their efforts in the field.

·         He presented many historical facts leading up to this era.

·         He read and explained excerpts from his book which he began writing in 1971.

 

State Representative Stephanie Cummings reported:

·         There have been several proposals on tolls:

1)  14 tolls on bridges to be repaired.

       2)  Trucks only tolls.

       3)  Taking a portion of the Rainy Day Fund

 

District 4 Alderman George Noujaim reported:

·         They just finished the last meeting for this session.

·         The City Tree Lighting will be on December 1st.

·         There will be a coat drive at Bobs Stores and Bell Academy.

·         He will be hosting a coffee hour at Brooklyn Bakery on Sunday November 24th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am for residents to meet their Aldermen.

 

Secretary Dory St. John reported:

·         A brief summary of our last meeting in October was read.  These minutes are posted on the EMNA website.  This month’s minutes will also be posted on the EMNA website.

·         Correspondence included a get well card was sent to Donna Burnes.

·         One new neighbor moved into the East Mountain neighborhood on Garassino Place

·         Motion to place the secretary’s report on file.  All in favor.  Motion carries.

 

Treasurer Colin Coburn reported:

·         Current report for October 1st through October 31st was presented at the meeting and will be on file.  If anyone would like additional information regarding the Treasurer’s Report please contact him.

·         Motion to place the treasure’s report on file.  All in favor.  Motion carries.

·         The Knights of Columbus Council will be joining together with its Annual Coats for Kids Distribution.  Anyone in need of a coat they will be distributed behind St. Francis Xavier Church in Xavier Hall on November 29th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

 

City Liaison Officer Mike Ptak reported:

·         The annual Artisan Market will take place at City Hall on November 23rd. from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

·         The annual tree lighting will take place on December 1st.

 

Neighborhood Watch Commander Bob McGovern reported:

·         The Park Board recently met to address the noise in Hamilton Park related to the car show.

 

Community Property Project Tom Brunnock was absent.

 

Old Business:

·         Flag removal took place last Friday.  The ones in disrepair will be replaced.

·         There is a vacancy for Vice President of EMNA.  Volunteers are needed.

·         Waterbury Neighborhood Council awards dinner took place on October 24th and was a success.

 

New Business:

·         On November 30th new Christmas lights will be installed at the East Mountain Golf Course.

·         The East Mountain Christmas Tree lighting and visit with Santa will take place on December 8th at 5:00 pm.

·         Larry Davino received a Community Caring Award for the beautification of East Mountain Park.

·         There will be a Pot Luck Dinner and Social after the EMNA December 18th meeting.
