MINUTES

Meeting was called to
order at 7:08 pm which began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Bill Burnes
and followed by a Moment of Silence for our departed neighbors.
Community Relations
Officer Charles Carangelo reported:
·
Critical
incidents in Waterbury involved an ATT store on East Main St. being robbed, a
vehicle shot in Austin Heights, a stolen car found on Bentwood Ave, a gun
stolen from an unlocked car, an ATM stolen at the Quick Mart on Wolcott St., a
kitchen fire on Meriden Rd., and elderly fraud on Marlborough St.

He encouraged
residents to report anything suspicious to him at 203-525-8797
·
To report
potholes, unsightly trash, etc., call 311 or go onto the city website. There is also an app: I report wtby.
Alderman Mike DiGiovancarlo
reported:
·
Anyone with a
house security camera is encouraged to register it with the City of Waterbury.
·
St. Peter & Paul
school will be closing in June despite the fact that $100,000 was raised to
keep it open.
·
The new city
budget will be implemented on 4/1/19.
There will be no tax increases in this budget.
Secretary Dory St. John
reported:
·
A brief summary
of the January meeting was presented. A full report of the January minutes are posted on the EMNA website. There was no meeting in
February due to inclement weather.
·
Minutes for
today’s meeting will be posted on the EMNA website.
·
Correspondence
included a letter of invitation to the Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo who will be attending our April meeting.
·
Three new
neighbors moved into the East Mountain Neighborhood: East Mountain Rd., Pineridge Rd., and DeBisschop Lane.
Treasurer Colin Coburn
reported:
·
Current reports
for January and February were presented at the meeting and will be on
file. If anyone would like any further
information regarding the Treasurer’s Report please contact him.
·

Larry Davino.
Motion carries.
President Mike Stere reported on the last meeting of the Neighborhood
Council:
·
The Council meets
the fourth Wednesday of every month.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
·
Lisa Valez who was very involved with the Council recently
passed away.
·
Cleaning up
blight will be addressed.
·
The Board of
Alderman approved of the development of a park in the Brooklyn section of
Waterbury.
·
The President of
the Council, Art Denze, will be on Public Access
Channel 13 on Thursdays at 8:00 pm.
City Liaison Officer Mike
Ptak reported:
·
Earth Day will be
Saturday, May 4th. The rain
date will be the following Saturday, May 11th.
·
The schedule of
the hydrant flushing will be coming out soon.
·
The water tank in
East Mountain will be painted this year.
·
St. Peter and
Paul School will be closing.
·
“Winter is the
Pits” Fire Pit Festival was a success.
Neighborhood Watch
Commander Bob McGovern was absent therefore there was no report.
Community Property Project
Tom Brunnock reported:
·
After 3 ˝ years
the project approval is still ongoing.
·
A Motion to
Dismiss has been filed and will be heard in 60 days.
State Representative
Stephanie Cummings reported:
·
There was a
billion dollar increase in taxes proposed by Governor Ned Lamont.
·
New bills proposed
include:
·
82 tolls on our
highways. If this is passed it will cost
anyone who commutes from Waterbury to Hartford five days per week $800. per
year.
·
$15.00 minimum
wage.
·
Paid family
medical leave.
·
Legalization of
marijuana.
·
Convert a portion
of teacher pensions to municipalities.
·
Juveniles will be
transferred to adult court after two felony convictions.
·
There will be a
Tolls Informational Forum on Thursday, March 21st from 7:00 – 8:30
pm at the Crosby High School Auditorium.
Old Business:
·
Flags will be
installed at the end of April or the beginning of May. Many new flags and poles have been purchased.
New Business:
·
Neighborhood
Watch signs have been purchased. Bob
Perigard ordered 8 signs to be installed.
·
Appointments for
Treasurer and Vice President are due in May.
Larry Davino and Bill Paternoster have
volunteered for the nominating committee.
·
The lower lights
have been removed from the East Mountain Christmas Tree. A bucket truck will be needed to remove the
upper lights.
·
April 12th
is the deadline for the Harry Northrop Scholarship application.
·
Waterbury Police
Chief Fernando Spagnolo will be our guest speaker at
the April 17th meeting.
·
We need
volunteers for Hospitality for our April and May meetings.
Alderman George Noujaim
reported:
·
There will be an
Easter Egg Hunt in Fairlawn Park on Saturday, April 13th from 10:00
am to 12:00 pm. The Easter Bunny will be
there as well as farm animals for petting.
·
The East Mountain
ball field will soon be refurbished.
·
There will be a
“Meet your Alderman” event at the Cheshire Coffee House on March 30th
from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
